At Moses Mabhida Stadium, we like to make history and leave a mark. This year has been no different, as we hosted the Comrades Marathon finish for the first time. We’re ticking off another first this August as KZN’s beloved Cell C Sharks take on Union Bordeaux Bègles from France!
This historic game is one of many initiatives to come from the Ethekwini Municipality’s partnership with the Cell C Sharks. The game, taking place on 17 August 2018, is expected to attract thousands of fans to the iconic stadium, which will benefit the City of Durban as a whole. With an estimated economic spin off of over R75 Million, the game is more than an exciting installment on Durban’s sporting calendar. The long term goal is to establish Durban as the sporting capital of the country, which will positively impact the local economy, employment rates and tourism.
Commenting on this match, The Sharks CEO, Gary Teichmann, said: “Through our valued partnership with Durban Tourism, we are happy to be participating in this exciting inaugural Durban Challenge match against a strong Bordeaux Bègles team. We at The Sharks are gearing to host an exciting Test Match the following day and the support of our community is instrumental to the success of this festival of rugby in our province over that weekend.”
As the country’s most popular stadium, we’re thrilled to be part of yet another game-changing, history making event. All we can say is…Durban Challenge, accepted!
