For someone that has been practising photography just shortly over a year, aspiring photographer Thandolwenkosi Gcumisa has a big career lined up ahead of him.

As one of the official photographers to the recent Africa All Stars concert held right here at People’s Park earlier on in May, as well as  one of the official photographers of the upcoming Top Gear Festival South Africa, Thando is definitely one Durbanite to watch.

MMS: Hi Thando, tell us about the man behind the lens, when did your enthusiasm for photography begin?

TG: I’m a very emotional person so whenever I’m around family, friends or anybody that just makes me happy, those are the moments that I truly cherish. Through photography I’m able preserve just that one moment which I think is absolutely amazing to me. I only started taking photography seriously just over a year ago.

MMS: Durban is a beautiful place and we’re loving the lighting in your imagery that showcases just that. Where is your favourite place to shoot in Durban and what makes our city so special?

TG: It just has to be the Moses Mabhida stadium!! When you’re standing 106 meters high over the world class stadium the city takes a totally new character…so peaceful, calm and still very bubbly and bright which reflects our friendly welcoming city and its people.

MMS: We know you’re an aspiring photographer and you’re busy launching your career in the industry. If you could shoot anybody or thing, who or what would it be and why?

TG: Now that’s a tough one but I’m a person that loves people and the spirit of togetherness, so for me anything that will get thousands of people all under one roof for the same purpose, I’d love to shoot! I get excited just thinking about our passionate fans coming in their numbers to support what they love most…it could be soccer, rugby, cricket, you name it. Being able to capture the emotion in their faces is priceless. I just love people.

MMS: Seeing as you were born and bred in Durbs, you should know our city pretty well,we know you do! Are there any hidden gems you’d care to share with us? (We won’t tell anyone, promise)

TG: Haha, Yoh!! What’s with all these hard questions? Honestly, I think Durban as a whole is so diverse and beautiful in so many ways. From the actual city and the suburbs, right down to the townships-where I’m from-is all so beautiful.

It was absolutely beautiful! Later on this month I will also be covering the Top Gear Festival 2013, as well as the upcoming R. Kelly concert. Those two are the BIG ones that I’m looking forward to, I’m really psyched for that!!
